A year after the most unprecedented natural disaster of our time, Louisiana is still at a cultural crossroads. It is more important than ever to become proactive and protect the architecture, the culture, the spirit, and the history of America's most unique state. In the last year since the hurricanes, the Foundation for Historical Louisiana has been most effective in accomplishing the following:

1. Hosting at the Old Governor’s Mansion, a post –Katrina National Trust for Historical Preservation-sponsored strategic planning meeting to aid preservation and disseminate information to the national media;
2. Leading the effort for Baton Rouge’s first designated local historic district, Drehr Place, and continuing advocacy and educational programming for additional historic designations in the future;
3. Working tirelessly to save historic properties, including the Kress Building and a 19th century Acadian cottage on Louisiana Avenue;
4. Representing the interests of the FHL members on the boards and commissions of the Baton Rouge Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Louisiana State Museum, and the EBRP Historic Preservation Commission;
5. Protecting and preserving the integrity of the landmark Old Governor’s Mansion and its museum collection

In Louisiana, we are still in the early stages of recovery. Our state is reshaping in a fashion that no one would have suspected before the storms. We have much work to do and we must remain vigilant. All eyes will be on Baton Rouge and entities, like the Foundation, that work to improve the quality of life in our capital city.

Since 1963 we have been committed to preserving all that is unique and wondrous about Louisiana. The Foundation has recently been recognized by the prestigious National Trust for Historic Preservation as a Local Partner Organization. In our entire 43-year history, this has been our most critical year. The next few years are crucial in how the cultural landscape of Louisiana shapes out.
