March 9-10, 2007 • Magnolia’s Memories IV

Location: Historic Magnolia Cemetery

The Foundation for Historical Louisiana (FHL) will “bring back to life” notable Baton Rougeans to tell their intriguing life stories in the popular Magnolia Memories. “We’re featuring citizens who are buried there or lived here,” says Baton Rouge filmmaker Randy Walsh, organizer of the drama. “And who better to explain the foundation of today’s Baton Rouge than those who lived it? So we’re calling them back from the grave to talk to us.” The outdoor drama vignettes are set in candle-lighted Historic Magnolia Cemetery on Florida Boulevard and North 22nd Streets in Baton Rouge. The drama is based on narratives from diaries, military records, logs, history books, and local legend.

Exhibit will include David Horowitz’s photos of Blues musicians, Big Bo Melvin, Clarence Edwards, Henry Gray, Kenny Neal, Troy Turner, Raful Neal, Lazy Lester, Larry Graner, Silas Hogan, Guitar Kelly, Tabby Thomas, and Chris Thomas.

July 19, 2007 • 31st Annual Preservation Awards Banquet

Each year the Foundation, Baton Rouge’s preservation organization, recognizes those individuals and groups across the state who exemplify its mission of preserving the cultural and architectural heritage of Louisiana. These prestigious awards, dating back to 1976, have honored preservationists, authors, scholars, architects, and museums. This year’s Preservation Awards Banquet at the LSU Faculty Club, will honor these outstanding preservationists nominated by the community at large.

Cocktail cash bar opens at 6:00 p.m.
Dinner will be served at 7:00.

August 4, 2007 • Battle of Baton Rouge Commemorative Ceremony

Location: Historic Magnolia Cemetery
Time: 10 am

The Foundation for Historical Louisiana invites you to gather at the site of the 1862 Battle of Baton Rouge for a patriotic, colorful, and moving event complete with Civil War re-enactors and cannon firings for the 24th Annual Commemorative Ceremony at Historic Magnolia Cemetery. At 10:00 a.m., the ceremony will begin with the presentation of colors and flag raising. Groups participating include the Louisiana State Militia, Sons of the Confederate Veterans Re-enactors, Donaldsonville Cannoneers, the Fifth Company Washington of New Orleans, and the Sixth Massachusetts Battery. Wreaths will be lain by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Children of the Confederacy, and other Historic Organizations.

Volunteers will be on hand to answers questions about Historic Magnolia Cemetery, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For further information, please contact with Foundation for Historical Louisiana at 225-387-2464.

 

August 16, 2007 • Forum 35's "Downtown Sip and Stroll"

 

Join us for a different kind of social! We'll start with a reception at the Old Governor's Mansion including a wine tasting from Calandro's and light hors d'oeuvres. Next, we'll be treated to the new "Walking Tour of Historical Downtown Sites." which will end at the Roux House where we'll wrap up the evening.

It will be warm, so members are encouraged to change into cool, casual clothes after work. (Shorts are fine.)

Co-hosted by The Foundation for Historical Louisiana and the Baton Rouge Visitors and Convention Bureau.

 

September 18th, 25th - October 2nd, 9th, 2007 • Jitterbug Dance Lessons

running for four consecutive Tuesdays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Old Governor’s Mansion. Prizes will be awarded for the first, second, and third place winners of the jitterbug contest at the Gala and names will be announced and featured in the FHL newsletter and on the website.

Dance instructor Beverly Cook will conduct the one hour dance lessons beginning at 7 p.m. at the Old Governor's Mansion on September 18 and 25 and on October 2 and 9. Cook said she will teach the basic jitterbug and waltz steps at each lesson, adding new steps to each session for participants who attend all four lessons. Cook says both the waltz and jitterbug are defined dance styles from the 40s.

The cost of the four lessons is $35 per person or $50 per couple, which also covers an individual or family membership to the Foundation for Historical Louisiana. Current members of the FHL will be provided free admittance to the lessons but are urged to make a donation.

October 4th, 2007 • Preservation Salon

Preservation Salon on the “Fabulous Fashions of the Forties” presented by Pamela Rabalais-Vinci of the renowned LSU School of Human Ecology. Mrs. Rabalais-Vinci is Curator of the LSU Textile & Costume Museum, with expertise in historic textiles and apparel, modern western fashion, and the fashion industry. There will be a powerpoint presentation and clothing of the period on display. Attendees are invited to bring their items of apparel that date to the decade of the forties.

The Preservation Salon will take place in the East Room of the Old Governor’s Mansion, 502 North Boulevard from 6-8 pm. The event is free to members and potential members. The Foundation for Historical Louisiana is Baton Rouge’s historic preservation organization with the mission of preserving the cultural and architectural heritage of Louisiana, especially the capital city. A membership drive is currently in place. Dues start at $25.00 for students.

October 5th, 2007 • 3rd Annual Mid City Heritage 5k Run and Cemetery Stroll

The Mid City Historical Cemeteries Coalition & Mid City Redevelopment Alliance will host the 3rd Annual Mid City Heritage 5k Run and Cemetery Stroll sponsored by Cox Communications, BREC, Chase Bank, Baton Rouge General, the Louisiana Lottery, Regions Bank, Mid City Merchants, The Jambalaya Shoppe, Club South Runners Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge Coca Cola, Roselawn Monument Co., Kleinpeter Dairy Farms, Vieux Carré Condominiums, Foxy’s Fitness Center, and Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.

The 3rd Annual Mid City Heritage Run and Stroll takes place Friday, October 5, 2007. The 5K Run begins at 6:30 PM and Cemetery Stroll will begin at 6:45 PM. The staging area will be at Sacred Heart’s Baseball Field at 2250 Main Street. Funds raised by this event will benefit the Mid City Historical Cemeteries Coalition in support of cemetery preservation and restoration through heritage education. Funds will also be used to assist in the maintenance of five historic Mid City cemeteries.

The entry fees are $20 in advance or $25 at the event. The 5K contestants will run along a course plotted through the streets of Mid City. The Cemetery Stroll will take you through three of Mid City’s historic treasures: Magnolia Cemetery, National Cemetery, and Sweet Olive Cemetery. Various prizes, including cash prizes, gifts and ribbons, will be awarded to 5k winners. Strollers will also share in prize raffles throughout the evening.

November 30, 2007 • Old Governor’s Mansion Holiday Open House

Celebrate this holiday season with the Foundation for Historical Louisiana at the Old Governor’s Mansion Holiday Open House. This annual event coincides with downtown’s Festival of Lights and will showcase the Mansion, decked out in her holiday best! First floor historic rooms will be open and Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be in the East Room to listen to all of your holiday wishes. The Old Governor’s Mansion State Dining Room transforms into a shopping wonderland and is always a great place to find the perfect gift.

The Old Governor’s Mansion Holiday Open House is free and open to the public.
