A lecture, entitled “Victorian Mourning Customs,” will be held on Thursday, January 15, as part of the ongoing FHL Preservation Salon educational series. This month, it is sponsored in conjunction with the Louisiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and will feature speakers Pam Vinci, Curator of the LSU Textile & Costume Museum, Ryan Aldridge, and Dr. Jenna Tedrick Kuttruff. “At the same time that our nation celebrates the life of Abraham Lincoln, we are reminded of the great loss our country experienced with his tragic death. Victorian customs surrounding bereavement were elaborate and extensive and dress played a most important role, from dressing the decreased for post-mortem photographs and burial to expectation and practices of those grieving,” said Vinci about the lecture.
The lecture is free to FHL members and $10 to guests.
Refreshments will be served at 6 p.m. and the lecture and visual presentation begins at 6:30 p.m.

Photographer and pilot Fred C. Frey, Jr., began taking aerial photographs of Baton Rouge in the early 1960s as an innovative business practice. It soon became an ongoing passion that would continue into the 21st Century. ABOVE BATON ROUGE is the result of this forty year love affair, comprising over 140 then-and-now aerial photographs, presented as pairs, and visually chronicling the inspiring developments and changes that have taken place over the years in Louisiana's capitol city. Tom Guarisco provides texts defining the key landmarks and features in each pair of photographs, accentuating the striking differences between them.
